Purpose: To assess the ability to pay attention to detail, and to compare and discern differences among variously colored geometric designs. The work sample simulates sedentary work and makes the following physical demands upon the evaluee: reaching, handling, near acuity, accommodation, and color vision. Significant degrees of general learning ability, form perception, clerical perception, motor coordination, finger dexterity, manual dexterity, and color discrimination are called for in order to perform the work sample at a competitive level.
The work sample elicits information on several secondary work-related characteristics, including the ability to follow instructions, concentration skills, problem conceptualization skills, and self-confidence.
The work sample is well suited to work-hardening uses.
Design: Hands-on work sample exercise.
Special Features: Scores may be interpreted against criterion-referenced standards, supplied norms, or locally developed norms. The work sample is appropriate for use with disabled or nondisabled persons, but should not be used by evaluees who have severe visual impairments or color blindness.
Information Collected: The work sample has been analyzed according to U.S. Department of Labor job analysis techniques. The result of the analysis is a list of rated DOL work-related abilities and other factors that are required for successful work sample performance. Valpar uses Methods-Time Measurement (MTM) to establish industrial work rate standards for the work sample. Successful performance requires a variety of DOL aptitudes, physical demands, and other factors.
The evaluator uses accuracy standards and learning curve adjusted MTM standards to determine whether the evaluee has demonstrated the work sample’s Worker Qualifications Profile. Unadjusted MTM standards are also given.
Procedure: The evaluee sits in front of the work sample and compares the colored, geometric shapes on each of 50 cards to shapes shown on one of three specified “master key cards” mounted permanently onto the work sample. Whenever the specified master key does not contain all of the colored shapes shown on a card, the evaluee so indicates by punching a stylus through the appropriate hole in a mounted, hinged scoring board.
Components: The work sample is a box 23 1/2″ x 23 1/2″ x 3″ made of particle board and covered with blue, plastic laminate. It has a removable cover for protection during shipping and storage. A mounted, hinged, scoring board is centered in the front of the box, and a master card with three designs is centered in the upper part of the box. Also included is a bound set of 55 testing cards, a scoring stylus, a pad of 100 answer sheets, a pad of 100 scoring sheets, and a manual.
